London Police Vans Parked Outside Apple Store Regent Street

Metropolitan Police have multiple police vans parked in Oxford Circus, including three parked directly in front of the Apple Store flagship on Regent Street. The picture above was posted to Twitter by @Joe, a venture capitalist with m8 Capital in London.
Londoners are facing rioting and looting for the third night in a row. The BBC has extensive coverage of the events.
Any UK readers with pictures, video, or other information about the status of Apple Stores in the country, please get in touch via Twitter, email, or the comments on this post.
(The UK Android usrs are getting ready!!!)
KillBackground - Kill All Background Apps in AppSwitcher

The Multitasking / AppSwitcher feature, first added in iOS 4, is a great implementation that allows quick switching of applications from anywhere on your device. For the most part, in terms of use for simple purposes, the AppSwitcher does a great job of giving you the options and methods you need to best use your device. The only downside to the Multitasking feature is that you're only able to remove one background application at a time. This can be cumbersome and extremely annoying, especially if you have a ton of applications open. Background applications many times can bog down the performance of your device; thus it is applicable to check every so often to delete processes you're not using. A new tweak that just appeared in Cydia, KillBackground, makes the removal process much easier.
It's quite simple - when you access your AppSwitcher view, there are two skull like tabs on both sides of the view. Tapping either one of those tabs will kill/remove all background tasks in your AppSwitcher. Quick and simple. There are no options or settings to configure and it works well. And to top it off, the tweak is free of charge!
Give it a shot if this something that would be of use to you - it requires iOS 4.0+ and works on all iDevices (I tested on iOS 5 beta 4 and it works fine - using jailbreak tweaks and applications on the iOS 5 beta will be done at your own risk. Please be wary of the consequences and possible risks).
Name: KillBackground
Author: Mathieu Bolard
Version: 1.0-1
Price: Free
Post your thoughts on this in this thread: there are other applications like this that do similar actions, however what makes this one nice is that it is simple, free, and located inside the AppSwitcher view.

Apple opening Waterloo retail store August 13th (“Apple Store Conestoga”)

Apple is invading RIM’s home turf and opening a retail location in Waterloo on Saturday, August 13th. The store is in the Conestoga Mall (550 King Street North) and is aptly named the “Apple Store Conestoga”. The doors will officially open at 9:30am and as usual there will be the grand opening celebrations, iPhones (Apple stated this is “the most innovative phone in the world”), iPads, Geniuses and most likely a lineup. |

WIND to release the “WINDtab+” and an all-in $29/month “Super Smart” plan

Last week it was revealed that WIND Mobile will start expanding the options of their WINDtab payment system. Well, good news has leaked online and according to a post on HowardForums it seems a launch is imminent. This will be called the WINDtab+ and there are no exact details but instead of the limited $150 it’s now going to be available up to to $400 off any phone, plus you’ll also be able to “Tab up” when you want to get a newer phone down the line.
There’s even better news when it comes to a new WIND promo. A “Super Smart” plan that includes Unlimited talk, text, data, voicemail and Call Control features (Caller ID, Call conferencing, Call forwarding and Missed Call Alerts) for $29/month.
No details on an official launch date for these but they will be available in time for back-to-school.

Gizmodo iPhone 4 case ends. No Gawker charges, 2 misdemeanors filed against definders'

A year and a half after the whole “Gizmodo buys a lost iPhone 4″ case, the San_Mateo_District_attorney levied a decision in the matter.
The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office has filed_misdemeanor charges against two individuals for the misappropriation of an iPhone 4 prototype that was_lost by an Apple employee and subsequently recovered in a Redwood City establishment by the defendants_on March 25,_2010._Brian Hogan, 22, of_Redwood_City was charged_withone count of misappropriation of lost property, and Sage_Wallower, 28, of Emeryville, was charged with misappropriation of lost property, and possession of stolen property._Their_arraignment is scheduled for Thursday, August 25, 2011_at 9:00 in Redwood_City._After_a consideration of all of the_evidence, it was determined that no charges would be filed against employees of Gizmodo.
Interesting that they use the terms “misappropriation of lost property”. _Perhaps the statements about “stolen” were premature and inappropriate.
Gawker/Gizmodo had this to say:
We are pleased that the District Attorney of San Mateo County, Steven Wagstaffe, has decided, upon review of all of the evidence, that no crime was committed by the Gizmodo team in relation to its reporting on the iPhone 4 prototype last year. While we have always believed that we were acting fully within the law, it has inevitably been stressful for the editor concerned, Jason Chen, and we are glad that we can finally put this matter behind us.
We’re interested to hear what Apple has to say on the matter and of course have reached out.

Apple passes Exxon to become world’s most valuable company

As of market close on Wednesday, Apple’s market capitalization totals $337.17 billion — $6 billion higher than Exxon Mobile at $330.77 billion — making Apple the most valuable company in the world. Apple’s market cap topped Exxon’s briefly during trading on Tuesday, but Exxon rallied ahead of close to regain the No. 1 spot. Shares of Apple stock fell 2.8% to $363.69 on Wednesday, while Exxon’s stock dropped 4.4% to $68.03 as trading closed. Mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad have helped breathe new life into Apple, which found itself on the verge of bankruptcy 15 years ago. While Apple and Exxon may bounce around as No. 1 and No. 2 in the days and weeks to come, Apple’s climb from dire straights to the world’s most valuable company will likely be studied in business schools around the world for decades. Apple is expected to launch new iPhone and iPad models this fall. |

iPhones Stolen in London Riots Will Be Useless Within 48 Hrs

iPhones stolen in the London Riots will be useless within 48 hours, reports MacWorld.
Speaking to several networks, the site learned that the stolen handsets can be easily blocked.
Once they have examined their stock records, store owners will be able to report the hardwired IMEI numbers for each lost handset which will result in networks adding them to their Equipment Identity Register (EIR), which will stop them working with any SIM within 24 hours. The networks will in turn add their EIR list to the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), a central database of IMEI numbers accessible by all major networks. That will turn off their use on any UK network within 48 hours.
Unfortunately, this may not be a problem for the thieves but rather for the individuals who innocently purchased a 'used' device. Beware of any deals too good to be true.

Production of Apple’s next-gen A6 processor begins at TSMC; A6 devices to launch Q2 2012

Trial production of Apple’s next-generation A6 mobile processor has begun, Taiwan Economic News reports. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has kicked off a test run of A6 chipsets — which could be 28-nanometer SoCs that feature dual or quad-cores and ARM-based architecture according to earlier reports — and Apple devices carrying the new chips are expected to be released in the second quarter next year at the earliest, according to multiple anonymous industry sources. Reports dating back to June suggested that Apple dumped Samsung following multiple patent disputes, and the company would instead utilize TSMC for production of its next-generation A6 processor. This new Taiwan Economic News report contradicts earlier rumors, however, which claimed that TSMC had begun its trial run of A6 chips last month. This could be a new test run, or earlier reports could have been misguided, of course. Taiwan-based TSMC is the world’s largest contract microchip manufacturer. |

Am I the only one that isn't tremendously excited about LTE? I find my up / down on my mobile device to be both reliable and fantastic and rich media is just as quick - With bandwidth caps dropping and speed rising, it only really means one thing.. Unless the plan systems change. |

I also don't care about LTE, same reasons as Jer.
Pushing 150 mbps w/ 6GB cap will only lead to overusage fees, b/c you don't feel the pain until you see your bill. My first IP4 bill was 790 mb and I had to ditch out $8.00 extra.
Also, think about the battery life on LTE speeds w/ more hardware power too?
Speaking of speeds; the 6GB plan will be nothing for the next gen iPhone pushing at 14.4 mbps.
