Developing: Apple granted “EU-wide preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy” devices
A Dutch court today issued an “EU-wide preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy” devices (excluding the Galaxy tablets), according to a report from Foss Patents who just posted the official court order.
From the report:
The Rechtbank ‘s-Gravenhage (a Dutch court in the city of The Hague) today issued an EU-wide preliminary injunction against Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones — but not the Galaxy tablets — at Apple’s request. The decision follows a hearing held on August 10 and 11, 2011.
The “EU-wide” decision will take effect in mid October, approximately seven weeks from now. However, “EU-wide” in this case is not necessarily all of Europe, rather only in countries where a specific patent is valid. Foss Patents explains:
This relates to countries in which one particular European software patent (EP 2059868) is valid. (Formally it’s a “device” patent, but it doesn’t represent any innovation on the hardware side, so the nature of the invention is that of a software patent the way I define that term.) The status of that patent varies between various countries as this list shows.
This comes on the heels of Samsung appealing a similar preliminary injunction (which has been temporarily lifted) granted by a German court halting sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the EU, claims that Apple doctored images of the Galaxy S in a Netherlands court, and some pretty crazy tactics on Samsung’s part regarding prior art arguments. We’re not sure what this means for Samsung’s upcoming line up of newly branded Galaxy devices slated to launch at IFA. We’ll keep you posted as more info becomes available.

Steve Jobs resigns as CEO of Apple, Tim Cook takes his place
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs announced on Wednesday that he is no longer fit to serve as the company's chief executive officer, officially resigning from the position, which has been be filled by Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook.
The announcement came Wednesday evening in a press release directed at the Apple Board of Directors, as well as the company's community. Jobs said he would like to stay on as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee, a wish that was granted by the board.
"Steve's extraordinary vision and leadership saved Apple and guided it to its position as the world's most innovative and valuable technology company," said Art Levinson, Chairman of Genentech, on behalf of Apple's Board. "Steve has made countless contributions to Apple's success, and he has attracted and inspired Apple's immensely creative employees and world class executive team. In his new role as Chairman of the Board, Steve will continue to serve Apple with his unique insights, creativity and inspiration."
He also recommended that Cook, who has fulfilled Jobs' duties as CEO during his medical leave, take over as the chief executive. The board also agreed with Jobs' assessment, and Cook is now CEO.
"The board has complete confidence that Tim is the right person to be our next CEO," Levinson said. "Tim's 13 years of service to Apple have been marked by outstanding performance, and he has demonstrated remarkable talent and sound judgment in everything he does."
Jobs' resignation was submitted to the Apple Board of Directors Wednesday. His role on the board, as well as Cook's election to the board, are both effective immediately.
Jobs has long maintained that his health is a private matter. His public letter issued on Wednesday made no mention of his current medical condition. Jobs had been on medical leave since January, and has had a long bout with cancer.
Jobs' full letter is included below:
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Mossberg: Jobs intends to be involved in developing major future products and strategy, will stay active
In case you thought otherwise, the Wall St. Journal‘s Walt Mossberg says that Steve Jobs’ role at Apple will remain unchanged:
Extremely well-informed sources at Apple say he intends to remain involved in developing major future products and strategy and intends to be an active chairman of the board, even while new CEO Tim Cook runs the company day to day.
Jobs has essentially been doing this since he went on medical leave in January.

Jailbreak Hacker Comex is Going to Work for Apple
Comex, the hacker behind recent iOS jailbreaks has announced that he will soon go to work for Apple.
It's been really, really fun, but it's also been a while and I've been getting bored.
So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple.
MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has already wished Comex the best, as do we.
@comex Congrats on the Apple internship...what a great opportunity!
Nicholas Allegra a.k.a. Comex first appeared on the iPhone jailbreak scene in March of 2010 when he demonstrated an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS called Spirit. Then in August of 2010 Comex released another untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.0 for all devices including the iPhone 4. This jailbreak was entitled JailbreakMe 2.0 and could easily be performed using just MobileSafari. After Apple closed the PDF exploit, Comex was again able to update JailbreakMe to perform an untethered jailbreak of iOS 4.3.3 in July.
Dino Dai Zovi, co-author of the Mac Hacker's Handbook, told Forbes that JailbreakMe's sophistication is on par with that of Stuxnet, a worm thought to have been designed by the Israeli or U.S. government to infect Iran's nuclear facilities. He compares Allegra's skills to the state-sponsored intruders that plague corporations and governments, what the cybersecurity industry calls "advanced-persistent threat" hackers: "He's probably five years ahead of them," says Dai Zovi.
Comex will be sorely missed by the iPhone Jailbreak community.

New images of leaked parts reveal iPhone 4S antenna, iPhone 5 case back
Rumors that Apple plans to release an updated iPhone 4 model — referred to on tech blogs as the “iPhone 4S” — alongside the iPhone 5 this fall gained momentum on Thursday evening as images of purported iPhone 4S parts were published by MacRumors.com. The site says it received parts belonging to the iPhone 4S case from supplier iPatchiPods.com, an online iPhone and iPod repair shop. If these components are believed to be authentic, it appears as though the iPhone 4S will feature a redesigned antenna that may help alleviate attenuation resulting from the notorious “death grip.” In addition, MacPost published an image of what is purported to be the rear back from Apple’s upcoming iPhone 5. The redesigned white case back is said to be from a prototype device and it bears the model number “N94,” which we reported belongs to a forthcoming iPhone. MacPost also published several images of various supposed iPhone 5 parts we’ve already seen in the past. The image of the iPhone 5 rear cover and another image of the iPhone 4S antenna assembly follow below.

Got my White IP4 today to use my $10 Data Sharing w/ my 6GB data plan.
(The Rogers Plus CSR claim this wasn't possible, since the share data was considered as "laptop data" and the iPhone uses a diff type of data. I told him it works for all devices that uses a IMEI to connect to the Rogers Network. Everything went smooth with activation and he was in total shock. Cool CSR though, most of them have the "it's not possible" mindset and won't trust your word on these things)
My future iPhones will be white from now on, yes it's BHATTI GAY ... but the pros out weighs the cons by far.
PROS:
1- You can barely see the fingerprints; with the black IP4, I am constantly cleaning the front and back glass from all the fingerprints.
2- You can barely see any scratches, large or small.
3- Installing screen protectors are instantly and painlessly.
CONS:
Well, it's bhatti gay and looks so girlie or FOBY.
Now I gotta be very cautious of my data habits, since I'm using two IP4s from one data plan. Makes me feel like I'm back at the 500 MB days.

Why would the screen protector be any easier to apply??

On the white glass - you can't see any micro dust (since dust is white), big ones can be detected and removed as always.
The LCD screen "black" area - you can see whatever dust and remove as always.
Yesterday's install took me less then 5 mins for both sides, normally takes forever. (Especially with my standards and my house has super thick carpet)
It's like a car black + clear coat - any damages or scratches is visible at any range of sight. White or Silver + clear coat is very hard to see any type of damages, unless you're @ ultra point blank range with 20/20 vision.

iTunes Match now available for developers
Apple’s iTunes Match service, which lets you store your entire music collection, including music you have ripped from a CD, or purchased or downloaded elsewhere, is now available for developers for testing. Apple’s iTunes Match service automatically scans your music library and checks your digital music files against Apple’s 18 million plus music library. If Apple has the song, you’re able to play it back at full quality, effectively transforming your library into an iTunes-approved one for only $25/year. Apple is giving developers a three-month extension on the normal 12-month subscription package for their troubles.
Samsung said to be considering webOS acquisition from HP
Following rumors that Samsung was considering a purchase of Hewlett-Packard’s PC business — rumors that Samsung would later deny — DigiTimes is having another go at this potential unholy union. This time around, however, the site claims Samsung is eying HP’s webOS platform instead of its PC business. DigiTimes on Monday reported that Samsung has hired HP’s ex-vice president of PSG marketing Raymond Wah to head up Samsung’s PC business. The report goes on to claim that Samsung is also “considering purchasing webOS to compete head on against Apple and Google, according to sources from notebook players.” The South Korea-based electronics giant is clearly having issues with Android right now. Despite Google’s OS having helped Samsung climb to the No. 2 spot among global smartphone vendors, it also brought with it a flurry of patent-related lawsuits from Apple and other companies. Google just announced its intention to acquire Motorola for $12.5 billion, however, and this purchase is intended in part to help the company defend itself and Android partners against patent complaints from Apple, Microsoft and other combatants in the patent wars. Beyond that, Samsung also has its own in-house smartphone platform, bada, which is seeing success in the Asian market. Samsung declined to comment.
(This will be interesting, Samsung will have its own ecosystem and leave Android behind. They know they're gonna lose the Nexus series to Motorola after the Nexus Prime releases and they always wanted their own ecosystem to control)
EDIT: Well well well, what do you know ...
"Verizon Wireless exclusively launching Samsung DROID or Nexus Prime in October"
