Warning: ultrasn0w May Break GPS on Baseband 6.15.00

The Dev-Team is warning about a potential issue with ultrasn0w for iOS 4.2.1 on iPhones with the 06.15.00 baseband. An increasing number of users with that version of the baseband software are reportedly losing GPS functionality when they unlock their device. The blog post says they are looking for the root cause but haven't found it yet, and notes that it's not a problem for all or even most users with that baseband. Still, to be on the safe side, they're suggesting people should just not expect GPS to work if they want to unlock iPhones with the 06.15.00 baseband using ultrasn0w:

Quote:
Update #5: Unlockers have been reporting mixed results about GPS functionality at 06.15.00. Until we can track down what differentiates those who retain GPS vs. those who lose it, be conservative and assume you’ll lose GPS at 06.15.00. As we work on finding the cause (and possibly a fix), please report your personal findings in our comments section. (Update: early indications are that while 06.15.00 is capable of GPS, it will require some further hacks. But please still be conservative and assume you will lose GPS at 06.15, in case the hacks don’t work).

'Angry Birds' Christmas Update Hits, Rebrands 'Angry Birds Halloween' to 'Angry Birds Seasons'

Word that Rovio Mobile was stuffing its yuletide Angry Birds update into its Halloween version of the game [$.99, HD] struck us as odd. Sure, Halloween is a "seasonal" offering, but these two holidays are complete opposites.

This thought must have occurred to Rovio as well because the update, which does indeed add several new snow-laden levels to the game, adds more than just Christmas cheer: It also rebrands the Halloween to "Angry Birds: Seasons," killing the current confusion and thereby nipping all future hullabaloo in the bud.

The Christmas-themed episodes are packed within the App under the heading "Season's Greetings," while the Halloween stuff has been moved to another episode called "Trick Or Treat." Angry Birds Halloween is still $.99 for the iPhone and iPod, while the HD version for the iPad remains at $1.99.

Having spent a few mind numbing minutes with "Season's Greetings," we can say that we fully endorse Rovio Mobile's attempt to get us in the seasonal mood. Plus, it's free, so complaining would be a bit silly. Download this update as soon as you can.

(Not gonna ruin it for you guys, but it's a strange update)

Edit: You can buy the toys!!!

UPDATE!!!!

Memory Leak Found in Angry Birds & Smurf Village - Sluggish performance system wide.

Before I start my explaining of my discovery, all the iPhones I've used during my testing were factory iOS vers.

Once iOS 4.1 launched, Angry Birds got very sluggish with their update and everyone thought it was Game Centre. Today I've stumbled upon something that's very interesting. Regardless what ver of Angry Birds you're playing (with Game Centre enabled), the more you play it, the more sluggish the game will get. Even when you exit the game, by a normal exist or exiting and killing the game in the multitasking dock, your iPhone will start to get poor performances during normal day usage. Such as entering or existing any app and rebooting does not help either. (You guys know, I love to reboot)

I notice a huge difference with mine starting yesterday, I updated and started to play Angry Bird Seasons and at the beginning, it seem like Rovio has fixed the sluggish animation. After playing the game for a while, sluggish'ness slowly came back. The whole day today; I've noticed the stutter' ness with my IP4 was system wide and it felt like i4.1 all over again. Doing normal daily tasks, such as entering and existing out of settings, apps and etc, you can see performance is not the same. I got another IP4 running on 4.2.1 w/ unplayed ver of Angry Bird Seasons installed. For a few hours of testing, with both IP4s side by side and with the same app usage and etc. The results were night & day pretty shocking. I grabbed a friend's 3G and played with Angry Birds Seasons and due to limited hardware, the sluggish'ness was unbearable after 25 mins.

I thought I was going crazy; but once I did some homework, I found out Angry Birds on the Android has many reports of sluggish performance too. Many of their devices can't even run Angry Birds awhile ago, since it needed FW 2.1 and it does need a lot of memory to run. This is where Steve Jobs claims of Android being fragmented is true.

Here's the solution I've found that worked for me.

A) Kill the game in the mulitasking dock
B) Clear out Safari's history, cache and cookies
C) Do a network reset, which is double bonus since rebooting the device, refreshes the ram.

What I think is happening, it seems like the game is constantly sending & receiving data with game centre and even though the 3G does not have game centre, the solution also worked to clear up the ultra poor performance.

Give it a try and you will notice how smooth and seeming'less your iPhone will be, just as it was freshly restored.

(EDIT: Buddy of mine reported Smurf's village also has a memory leak)

Workaround For Poor Battery Life Issue After Unlocking iPhone With Ultrasn0w 1.2

If you are observing poor battery life after unlocking your iPhone using a combination of PwnageTool or Redsn0w to update baseband to 06.15.00 and Ultrasn0w 1.2 for iOS 4.2.1 then you are not alone as some readers have reported the issue.

According to iPhone hacking expert, Sherif Hasim, it looks like the reason for the poor battery life issue is the hacktivation process used in PwnageTool and Redsn0w and not Ultrasn0w 1.2.

Sherif Hasim explains:

On a very important side note, before anyone starts to complain about battery drainage issues after installing the new ultrasn0w on the 6.15.00 updated BB, the culprit here is not ultrasn0w, it’s the hacktivation process (activating the phone by pwnage tool or redsn0w rather than using an official carrier sim to do so) that u mostly did while jailbreaking.

The 4.1 and 4.2.1 ipsws unlike their old ancestors, seem to keep looking for valid push certificates all the time, either thru your wifi, or thru your cellular data network (which u only have after installing ultrasn0w and hence u accuse it) , this can be seen clearly if u have a cellular working data plan for 3g or edge and u watched the settings > general > usage > cellular network data (sent & received are continuously increasing even without using any internet traffics on the phone) , this will also render the phone going hot even in stand by mode and also very rapid battery drainage occurs plus consuming ur data if you were not on an unlimited plan.

The good news is that, one of the iPhone Dev team members is working hard to fix the issue. Meanwhile, you can also try to fix this issue by borrowing the SIM of an official iPhone carrier from your friend and using it to activate your iPhone via iTunes.

CWTA: “wireless technologies are not a health risk”

There has been much debate on the health risks of wireless technology. Most recently the Simcoe County School Committee has been going all out guns blazing to rid of Wi-Fi in schools, stating children are experiencing “strange problems as they can’t hold a pencil, they feel faint, they have chronic headaches, and they have developed an erratic heart rate requiring medical attention”.

Today the Standing Committee on Health came out with their report that researched the “negative health impacts of radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation emitting devices, such as microwaves and wireless phones”. The Committee stated that “we would like to reiterate that, to date, there has been no credible science linking exposure to electromagnetic radiation emitting devices and adverse health effects”.

The Committee also went on to say that although they found no health risks but there was “significantly contradictory evidence”. This ranged from the recent Interphone Study that found there was a greater chance of developing a type of brain tumour if you used your cell on the same side of your head… to the “biggest gap in studies to date has been the effect of wireless technology on children” and that “the findings from studies on adults cannot be extended to children”.

Probably the best quote was from Bernard Lord, President & CEO of the Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) who proudly stated “The overwhelming evidence, as determined and published in studies worldwide by the respected scientific community, continues to support the conclusion that there is no public health risk associated with the use of wireless technologies. Government agencies in Canada and around the world responsible for establishing safety standards also support that wireless technologies are not a health risk.”

So there you have it… lots of government research and big words to say you can safely use your device without risks to your health.

A) Google
B) Wrong thread
C) THC is Tetrahydrocannabinol

;)

If it's a Android phone, try this thread here.

Interesting breakdown of who uses what platform. Is it un-PC to say that richer countries seem to have embraced the iPhone while developing countries/regions still trend toward Symbian? (Note: iOS numbers include iPod touch but not iPad) Pingdom via Daring Fireball

Back Up Blobs From Your Device with iSH

There's a new alternative for backing up your SHSH blobs that allows you to save your own copy in addition to the one on Cydia. iSH is a new tweak that still uses the Cydia On-File service by default, but also gives you the option to email your SHSH blobs to any address you choose. Best of all, it can be run directly from your phone, rather than requiring you to use a program like TinyUmbrella.

It's about as easy to use as possible: all you really need to do is to verify the information that pops up on your screen is correct and tap Save. After it's finished downloading the SHSHs, go to Manage SHSH and tap the version you want to save locally. This takes you to a blank mail message with the blobs already attached. Address it to yourself and/or any other account you want and you're good to go.

Given that future untethered jailbreaks are pretty much all expected to need earlier SHSHs to work, having a quick and easy way to make sure your blobs are backed up is key. This tool gets the job done with no fuss.

Viber VoIP iPhone app: 3G calling, no registration, and totally free

You know those voice minutes you've been coaxed into buying for, like, ever? Now would be an awesome time to bid 'em adieu. Out of nowhere, Viber has swooped in to crush the dreams of Skype and every other VoIP provider out there, and if these guys can reach critical mass, avid iPhone users will certainly be able to buy a mobile plan with fewer minutes. It works as such: install the free app on your iPhone, provide just your phone number (no "registration" is necessary) and then fire it up. Viber uses your existing contact and favorites list, and you can make Viber or standard voice calls from within the app; naturally, a Viber logo pops up beside any contact who is also a user, making it easy to see who you can VoIP call for free. As our brethren over at TUAW point out, there's simply no catch to be found -- well, except for those of you counting your kilobytes on AT&T's newer, metered data plans. Call quality was said to be excellent over 3G and WiFi, and potentially best of all, gratis SMS and an Android version are both on the way. Head on past the break if you need any additional convincing, and tap that iTunes link to get your download on. So, AT&T, what's the value proposition on those "rollover minutes" again?

(Seems like this apps copies your entire contact list and stores it on their server, also logs & stores your calls)

I just love losers like this ...

1) ed up his phone (since he's so amazing & very skillful)
2) Begs on a forum for help w/ very brief info
3) Pretends he has figured it out, doesn't post how he "figured" out & the advice was spotted / given on another forum after begging again
4) Boost about "anyone needs help pm me" BS.

I may not know everything and I still got a lot to learn, but behaviors like this is unaccountable. Anyone here that acts like this from now on, I will refuse to help and hope all of you will do the same.

iGay, charge your phone with wind.

Here's a cool iPhone accessory that should please both green technology advocates and critics of the iPhone's less than truly long-lasting battery. The winds of changing chargers are blowing thanks to designer Tjeerd Veenhoven, who has successfully tweaked a PC fan and merged it with a rubber iPhone case. The end result: the iFan, a unique homemade gadget that lets you fully charge your iPhone (it takes about six hours) using wind.

While one-quarter of a full day is, unfortunately, a long time to wait to charge your iPhone, there are practical applications for folks on-the-go or avid hiking enthusiasts (the outdoors type, in general) where the iFan is still a worthwhile charging mechanism to tote around. In the future, however, Veenhoven says he plans to update and further modify the blade structure of the fan to increase charging efficiency and, thus, the total length of time needed to fully charge the iPhone.

Yes, critics will says it's bulky and unwieldy. But demand for such green innovations for our gadgets has become such that even Apple is said to be ardently researching the prospect of solar panels for future iDevices upgrades. Of course, it will be a while before that research actually yields a change in product design. So, for now, it's up to third party accessory makers to carry the "green" banner. And that's exactly what people like Tjeerd Veenhoven will do all the way to the bank.
