Your not missing anything, its a giant iphone/pod. (without the phone) Big deal. Pointless if you have a computer or an iphone. One thing interesting that comes of this ipad is they used a new processor that they designed. Lets see if this technology is in the 4g iphones. The only thing missing is speed in these devices when it comes to app lag and such. Hoping they add more internal memory too.

I think it's a huge mistake to just take the iPhone OS and put it on this thing. The only apps which looked interesting were the ebook reader and the calendar. But even then, why not just buy a kindle?
Dr. Z
the tablet market is the secret to the future, the problem is that noone knows how to capitalize on it
asian designs are just horrible, the ipad is an apple product hence will be gimped for life due to proprietary requirements that apple shoves down your throught, hp tablet is as thick as a brick, and ebook readers are just lame, if i wanna just read, i'll get a book instead...

Exactly. I'm not a mac fan but I'd buy and use the out of that thing if it ran mac osx and was a little more like a computer than an iPhone.

After watching the iPad Keynote, I would have to say it's ok but, I wouldn't buy one.
Pros (That I noticed)
- That multitouch on it is amazing, watching the Nova demo and how he controlled the weapons with multi fingers is gonna open up a whole new world for app devs. Maybe Adobe will come out with app that turns this into tablet, once its hooked up to your Mac and change the way we use all the design software.
Cons (That I noticed)
- No multitasking or backgrounding (I doubt the iPhone FW 4.0 will allow it now)
- No Notifications
- Can't make calls, even though it has a mic + speakers and uses carrier data. Don't know if the jailbreakers + hackers can do much, since the speakers and mic are placed so close together. I assume they did that on purpose to give that nice interference LOL @ Apple for that one.
- No SMS even, if it had this it ... maybe I would get it. That's all I do on the iPhone now, data and txt msging. Now Ping! is gonna be kicking ass again for the iPad.
If they added a front facing camera, that would change a lot of things indeed, it would be like that Docomo Tablet from Japan. A women is reading the news and doing a video call with her daughter in the park.
Now a lot of the sites are claiming the iPad's OS is unfinshed and showing the rest would leak out 4.0 in March. I'll believe it when Apple confirms these wild predictions.

Apple lifts VoIP over cellular restrictions in new iPhone SDK
Apple lifts VoIP over cellular restrictions in new iPhone SDK
By Paul Miller posted Jan 27th 2010 10:07PM
Great news for the VoIP world: iCall, the maker of the iCall VoIP iPhone app that can catch a GSM call and flip it over to WiFi, has issued a press release saying that the new iPhone SDK allows for VoIP over 3G cellular connections. Previously such calls had to be made over WiFi, since AT&T's network (or someone well acquainted with AT&T's network) didn't think it was man enough to take the VoIP traffic. Interestingly, iCall says its 3G-friendly VoIP app is available now, and is the first and only such app in the App Store -- which seems like some pretty quick turnaround on everyone's part, but apparently the 3G restriction wasn't anything to do with the software itself, but instead a server-side block. We just tested this out and it totally works, and while we'll be looking for more verification that the ban has indeed been lifted, it sounds like it's time for some cheaply connected international parties in the streets
Apple iPad's 'Micro SIM' explained
While the news of Apple's iPad having 3G wasn't exactly a surprise, the move to a new format for the SIM certainly was. The SIM -- that tiny card that holds your contact info and account information that you find in your GSM handset -- is a 15 x 25mm plastic card whereas the new Micro SIM (also known as a 3FF SIM) is a diminutive 12 x 15mm, about 52% smaller. Needless to say, it's not physically compatible with your current phone. This card was developed by the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) to offer things like more storage space on-chip for provider applications, increased control and security functions -- over what, we don't know -- and the new smaller form factor allows it to fit in tiny devices. Frankly, we wouldn't call the iPad "tiny" and we have absolutely no clue what justification Apple had to switch to it other than a desire to be different -- this is the company that pioneered Mini DisplayPort, after all -- but the long and the short of it is that you're going to have a hard time finding a carrier offering Micro SIMs in the short term since the GSMA doesn't appear to be actively spearheading a mass conversion. In fact, from AT&T's perspective, this is better than a software lock in some ways -- you're not going to be able to download a hack that gets you on another network, so you're totally at the mercy of your carrier at choice for providing a compatible card. Intentionally evil? Perhaps not -- all standards have to start somewhere -- but it's an awful pain in the ass.
Update: T-Mobile (in a partnership with Lok8u GPS devices) announced they were bringing the 3FF SIM to US shores back on January 6th of this year. See the source link for more info

Features like Multitasking etc. would be considered "major" improvements and thus would have been available in even a demonstrative capacity at the Keynote - It's not happening in OS 3.2 (unfinished or not) and very unlikely on OS 4.0, if that is in fact the version that'll ship with the iPad.

I don't understand why the iPad didn't have multitask, it's powerful enough to do it without even trying. Even the iPhone can use multitask after JBing it.
