Microsoft releases first iPhone app: Seadragon Mobile

Yesterday, relatively quietly, Microsoft Live Labs released its first iPhone application. Seadragon Mobile is now available in the app store for free and it represents a pretty big step for the gang in Redmond. As popular as the iPhone is, it was bound to happen sooner or later but Microsoft’s entry into the iPhone app game is interesting on several levels, as is its explanation of the move. But first things first - what’s the app? Seadragon Mobile is essentially a demo of Seadragon photo technology on Apple’s mobile platform. Implemented in Microsoft’s Photosynth software, Seadragon allows for smooth zooming and panning on a photo by storing it at several different resolutions and displaying only the pieces needed at a given time. Sneaky. When discussing the reasoning behind choosing the iPhone as the platform for Seadragon Mobile, Microsoft basically pointed to the iPhone’s superior hardware when compared to “most phones out today”. Alex Daley, group product manager for Microsoft Live Labs, had this to say:
The iPhone is the most widely distributed phone with a (graphics processing unit). Most phones out today don’t have accelerated graphics in them. The iPhone does and so it enabled us to do something that has been previously difficult to do. I couldn’t just pick up a BlackBerry or a Nokia off the shelf and build Seadragon for it without GPU support.
Hmm. Seadragon Mobile comes with around 50 sample images that users can play with and Photosynth users will also be able to browse their synths, in 2D at least. It will definitely be interesting to see where Microsoft takes this, and also when some Windows Mobile-powered hardware might be deemed capable enough to get some Seadragon love.
*That's alittle ODD, but whatever* |

Help...so I'm looking to get a new phone with Rogers in January. I'm pretty sure I want a Blackberry. I don't like the giant ones with the full on keyboard, and I'm not a huge fan of touch screens. I don't need anything super fancy...I'm not a big phone nerd, so I basically just use it to text and call, and I wouldn't mind taking some pictures. I think I'm gonna get a data plan too so I can send emails.
I'm at 5th tier now, and plan on calling retentions to get me a nice plan/phone, so I dunno if that would give you any insight.
What are your recommendations?
And please don't convince me to get a full keyboard, b/c I'll just ignore your comment. I don't want one. |
Blackberry Flip.... Sarah just got it yesterday....she loves it already! Blackberry, yet small like a cell phone. |

Those are the 2 that I was thinking of. Weren't sure if there were other recommendations out there that I didn't know of.
Do you guys know the pros and cons of each?
(I know I could search myself, but I'd rather ask people that I know know about phones) |
The only difference other then aesthetic and operating system (which you can always upgrade on-line) is the screen. The flip has a higher resolution screen then the 8120 (or 30). |

Wonder if they're gonna come out with Sonic or SuperMonkey Ball 2? SuperMonkey Ball is still by far the best iPhone game. |
How did you get in my head, access my memory from two months ago, and pull out the thought I had that the iPhone REALLY needs a Sonic game?
I would love to have Sonic on my phone. Addicted to Crash Kart right now. So much fun. 6 bucks Isn't bad... |

Thought I'd post some stuff about my iPhone:
I really like my case, It's a Griffin elan form case, I paid $30 for it. Let's in some minimal pocket lint, but no big deal. My screen protector is wicked too. Its the anti-glare one sold at the apple store. It makes the screen surface feel different too, much smoother, and your fingers really glide around on it. In sunlight, it really improves screen visibility.

I was gonna get that case, but it has that huge opening at the top. Its ok, but not worth the price tag.
Power support screen protectors are "so-so",they get dinged up way too fast.
I really like the Incase Slider, but 44.00 after tax ... nigga you crazy? |

iPhone Dev-Team Expects 3G Unlock Before New Years!, Posted Today, 08:23 AM | Report #1
Great news for iPhone 3G owners who want to unlock their iPhones using software!
The iPhone Dev-Team is working hard on the iPhone 3G unlock and expects to have it released a couple days after Christmas.
According to team member MuscleNerd the "Target date is a few days after Christmas "
At first the unlock will be released for the iPhone's with the 01.45.00 baseband. If time permits the Dev-Team will try to complete an unlock for the 02.11.07 baseband as well.
Right now for 02.11.07 we have some untested ideas. Ideally we'd have something solid by the end of next week, but if we don't then it would be a staged release, with 01.45.00 first out of the gate.
Here is a list of the iPhone firmware versions and their matching basebands...
- 2.0.0 Firmware & 01.45.00 Baseband
- 2.0.1 Firmware & 01.48.02 Baseband
- 2.0.2 Firmware & 02.08.01 Baseband
- 2.1.0 Firmware & 02.11.07 Baseband
- 2.2.0 Firmware & 02.28.00 Baseband
Those of you lucky enough to still be on 2.0.0 or the 01.45.00 baseband will be able to unlock first. If you are at 2.1 or used PwnageTool to update to 2.2 then you will have the 2.11.07 baseband. This will be the second baseband to receive an unlock.
Those on the 02.28.00 baseband will likely have to wait a while before an unlock is released so make sure you use a tutorial on our site to jailbreak and update rather then using iTunes directly.
