Did RIM lose its BlackBerry software boss just ahead of QNX transition?

BGR has learned that Research In Motion’s head of BlackBerry software may have left the company. Suresh Periyalwar, Senior Vice President of Handheld Software, had been with RIM since April 2001 when he joined as Director of Software Development. He came to the company from Nortel, where he managed CDMA-related development for more than five years. Periyalwar was promoted to SVP at RIM three years ago in May 2008 according to his LinkedIn profile, which still has him listed as a RIM employee. BGR has also learned from a trusted source that several additional key executives have been planning to leave on their own accord. (more
RIM’s stock is down more than 60% from its 12-month high of $70.54, and there is a great deal of unrest at the company’s headquarters in Waterloo, Ontario. BGR exclusively published an open letter from an anonymous senior executive at RIM late last month, which pleaded for the company’s top management to make several strategic changes in order to regain momentum and mind share in the smartphone market. A later expose, also published by BGR, painted a troubling picture of the smartphone vendor that once revolutionized the industry.
If Periyalwar did in fact leave the company as multiple sources have informed BGR, it might not bode well for RIM’s next-generation smartphones. The departure of RIM’s SVP of Handheld Software just ahead of the company’s transition to QNX could imply that the executive did not have confidence in RIM’s brand new platform. On the other hand, Periyalwar may have been pushed out in favor of fresh leadership in its software division ahead of the company’s QNX smartphone launches. RIM declined to confirm or deny the executive’s departure when reached for comment by BGR. Periyalwar could not be reached for comment. |

Apple laptops can be hacked to self-destruct; flaw to be detailed by hacker next month

How’s this for an undocumented feature? Apple’s newer MacBook, MacBook Air and MacBook Pro notebooks have a security flaw that can allow hackers to remotely prevent the batteries from charging. Better yet, hackers can exploit the same flaw and remotely cause batteries to explode. Apple laptops’ new “smart” battery technology is intended to provide added control over power management, and it does just that. Unfortunately, it also gives hackers added control because the microcontroller chip that ships in recent Apple laptops can be accessed remotely using a default password shared by each and every notebook. Charlie Miller, the security expert who discovered the vulnerability, plans to showcase the flaw next month at the Black Hat security conference. There, Miller will show that he is able to access the battery controller remotely and cause it to refuse a charge, or even heat up until it catches fire and explodes. “These batteries just aren’t designed with the idea that people will mess with them,” Miller told Forbes last week. “What I’m showing is that it’s possible to use them to do something really bad.” Thankfully, the security expert also intends to showcase a fix for the flaw, which Apple will hopefully implement as soon as possible.

Motorola considering Nike+ SportWatch contender?

It looks like Motorola might be prepping to give the Nike+ SportWatch a run for its money. An intrepid tipster sent along a screenshot from a recent survey showing off what looks like a tricked out nano watch. Described as an "all-in-one fitness and music personal fitness device" (redundant much?) that packs a GPS for "accurate performance tracking," the as of yet unnamed gadget also sports a "smart music player" that compiles a list of songs based on the tunes that help you sweat your best. It also lets you wirelessly sync to your PC for workout analysis, and apparently does the same for Android devices. Among the possible names listed in the survey is the MotoActive, hinting at, but certainly not pinning down, Motorola branding. Of course this is just an online survey, so we wouldn't get too excited about your new running mate just yet.
Sony Ericsson makes iPod nano-like Bluetooth mini-display

LiveView 1.3-inch display for Android 2.x phones
Sony Ericsson has unveiled its first Android mobile accessory, the LiveView. It is a Bluetooth micro display designed to offer users a quick access interface for their mobile phones. Like an iPod nano, the device can be clipped on clothing or attached to a watch-strap. It allows users leave their phone in a pocket or a bag as it displays incoming calls and instant notification of email, as well as Facebook and Twitter feeds. Users can also control their music on the go, but like all Bluetooth devices, the maximum range of the LiveView is currently about 11 yards from the paired phone.
As the LiveView is compatible with Android, it also gives developers the opportunity to develop apps to take further leverage the capabilities of the device. It is compatible with most Android 2.x phones.
The Sony Ericsson LiveView will become available this fall, with pricing to yet to be confirmed. |

Rogers new Data Pass for 1 day or 1 week
United States:
Day Pass (24 hours) One Time Fee:
$5 = 2MB ($2.50/MB)
$10 = 10MB ($10.00/MB)
$20 = 40MB ($0.50/MB)
Weekly Pass (168 hours) One Time Fee:
$25 = 15MB ($1.67/MB)
$50 = 60MB ($0.83/MB)
$100 = 250MB ($0.40/MB) |
(Courtesy of Mobile Syrup)
What :whip:
15 MB should be $6 ($0.40/MB)
60 MB should be $12 ($0.20/MB)
250 MB should be $25 ($0.10/MB)
Now that would make more sense. |
