Thanks for the free advise. I quit smoking after 14 years. Was my first attempt to quit. We are now 13/14 months further and I still didn't smoke.I am so proud, but I gained 10 kg of weight. So I went to the gym and now I am addicted. I hit the gym 3 to 4 times a week. Loving cardio.
Started running the 5 km in 40 minutes and now I run it in 24:30. Don't like the weight, but some extra muscle would be great.
Is it wise to go max at cardio if you want to built muscle? |

Absolutely. You can always do cardio whether your looking to put on muscle, or just slim up. On weightlifting days, I'll do usually no more than 20 mins AFTER the workout. Non-weightlifting days, you can do 45 mins-hour...depending on how you much fat you have left to drop. Once you slim up, and your looking to keep muscle, then you will want to limit your cardio so you don't get too skinny. it all comes down to what you are eating in the end, and what your body goals are. |

After I get done with rehab class tomorrow, i'm going to the gym once again.
my goal?
every day, i want to do SOMETHING. i'm sick of being lazy and lathargic when it comes to working out on my own.
in 2009: i want to accomplish the following:
- be able to do 25 pullups non-stop
- gain at least 2" around my biceps (i don't even know what they are now, but i know they are small as )
- run the 1.5 mile PT test in under 11 minutes.
- i want to see my abs. like, seriously, w/out having to flex...like, they're just there. (i realize this will come with a combonation of proper diet as well, not just exercise)
anyone else have some gym goals for the new year?
also, when i move to oklahoma and get my own place, i'm totally buying that pullup-bar thing for your doorway
double edit,
also i want to get rid of my neckfat that i've developed over the year. i dunno how the to do that; but i want my chiseled jaw line back! |

i know i asked this before somewhere in the thread but I forgot and im way too lazy to search through 200+ pages...
i started running again after my workouts. i used to do long cardio which made me lose muscle so then i stopped running all together. now whats the reccomended ammount of cardio, im lifting with 3 sets of 10 reps for each exercise. i normally do around 15 minutes of jogging on the treadmall, is that enough to burn fat but not muscle? i lose almost 200 calories doing it, how much should i be losing? anyone? |

for starters i'd try 4 sets of the same weight
as for your cardio your goal is to exercise at a PERCENTAGE of your maximum heart rate. to determine your MHR, subtract your age from 220. to burn fat and not blood sugar for energy, you want to stay in the 50%-70% of your MHR.
sustaining 50-70% MHR at least 3 to 5 times per week for 30-60 minutes is a good approach.
never understood why people do cardio after they lift weights. it's very dtrimental to muscle recovery and growth if you're not pouring bucket loads of calories and protein down your throat. if you're going to do long cardio i've always recomended people do that on their non-lift days or light cardio prior to lifting. if you're going to do anything immediately after you lift it sould be either eating, sleeping or rubbing one out...then sleeping:gsmile: |

| Its because your insulin is low after an intense lift resulting in more effective fat loss. At least that's what my old college hockey coach said. |
