As of yesterday I am officially preparing for my marathon debut. The main focus will of course be on extending the distance of my weekend runs (LSD runs) with interval and shorter runs throughout the week.
Currently I'm at three times a week, might be extending it to four in a few months, but that depends on the overall progress.
Some weight loss in the meantime would be OK, I don't really like the idea of dragging along all of my current weight for 26.2 miles.
No gym for me, but I'm thinking about taking up something else besides running to keep it interesting and maybe to fill the fourth moment of exercise of the week. |

as for your cardio your goal is to exercise at a PERCENTAGE of your maximum heart rate. to determine your MHR, subtract your age from 220. to burn fat and not blood sugar for energy, you want to stay in the 50%-70% of your MHR.
sustaining 50-70% MHR at least 3 to 5 times per week for 30-60 minutes is a good approach.
never understood why people do cardio after they lift weights. it's very dtrimental to muscle recovery and growth if you're not pouring bucket loads of calories and protein down your throat. if you're going to do long cardio i've always recomended people do that on their non-lift days or light cardio prior to lifting. if you're going to do anything immediately after you lift it sould be either eating, sleeping or rubbing one out...then sleeping:gsmile: |
alright so according to that my heart rate should be 121. im not sure if this treadmill reads the heart-rate since I've never actually looked at it before, hopefully it does.
the reason i never do cardio before my weight lifting is so that I have full energy for the work out. I'll start doing it on my off days. I used to run around 30-60 minutes without paying attention to the heart rate, and it definetly caused muscle loss. if i stick to what you say is there any chance of that?
I'll try the four sets. I work out two muscle groups per workout so it shouldn't be a problem.

yeah I am but I wanna lose some of the fat that I gained as a result of eating to bulk up without losing the muscle as I said. |

Thanks! I've got two years of running experience (up to half marathons) as a start, but that's the easy part.
I'm trying to focus on just finishing it properly (i.e., without having to walk / stop) rather than having an exact time in my head. That'll be the focus if I ever try and go for a second :)
Best of luck to you too :) |

Trying some new supplements this month while I'm on an alcohol break :)
I took the progain extreme during December and put on about 3kg of weight which was good, unfortunately I've been on a drink and drug binge this holiday and lost it all again, oops.
Anyone know if its better to combine the 2 products or just stick to 1 of them?
I'm also looking for some cheaper products as these cost nearly 40 quid each! Quite a lot for a 1 month supply
Oh well time to start again ;) |

| nothing revolutionary and new for 2009, thinking of maybe skating some (rollerblading or ice skating) and possibly make use of my tennis racket by taking lessons. still plan on being in the gym 4 or 5 days a week. |

went back to the gym today:
ran 1 mile
3 sets of 5 pullups
1 set of 20 leg lifts in cap't chair
held 10 lb weight above head for 2 mins
held 25 lb weight above head for 2 mins
held 10 lb weight above head for 2 mins
1 set of 20 leg lifts in cap't chair
1 set of 5 pullups.
not really a lot - but more of focusing on the shoulders, i suppose. just did the leg stuff for randomness, i s'pose. but it all felt good. |

| Held weight above your head? Not sure that I have seen that one before, but I guess if your going for a burn it probably works. The only way to gain muscle is to stress muscle fibers and the only way to do that is through stretching them with weight (which for shoulders is at the bottom of the lift) so holding weights above your head seems to be a waste of time. You would be much better off doing shoulder presses while pausing at the bottom of the lift...just a suggestion. |
