There isn't any credible research out there to support the idea that running shoes do anything to prevent injuries. |
Perhaps, but I think it's undeniably clear to anyone who, for example, is a heavy pronator that wearing the footwear properly equipped to compensate for this added stress has saved them plenty of discomfort they would otherwise be enduring with a shoe that wasn't designed to accommodate such a need.
I'm a horrible supinator, and up until the middle of my running career, I was just picking up running shoes that were mainly designed for pronators (which seems to be the bulk of running shoes I've come across). I can tell you that I ran far more comfortably in the right kind of shoe.
Whether or not this necessarily prevented the onset of any injuries may be another discussion |

| Remember that your body would also be used to shoes by now, since you've been wearing them since an early age. You need to factor that in too. |

It's common sense though that padding helps to alleviate pain and injuries. |
Not necessarily. Padding in certain places (like on the heel) just encourages you to land on a parts of your foot that aren't designed to absorb heavy shock. Same goes for knee positioning.
One of the first things I noticed when I started running barefoot was that stepping on stuff hurts like . Because of this I instinctively positioned myself in the most efficient posture to reduce shock. So I might not have heavy cushions under my feet but, having more sensory feedback, I end up with less strain all over. |

Have you tried them?
The science behind them is perfectly sound, and there are ultramarathon runners who swear by them. I trust them more than running shoe corp advertising gimmicks. |
A buddy of mine bought some for the sheer purpose of outdoor sport use, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, free running etc. Said they are the most uncomfortable things he's ever put on his foot. Just poor design really, the toes were probably the worst part.
edit // Enrique, you should try 2 days on 1 day off, that's what I was doing when I was trying to get size. The 1 day off between really helps your body recover and build muscle much easier than going 5 days in a row. |

Fair enough. I can see the toes being a problem, not fitting every type of foot. Honestly though, this is the first negative thing I've heard about them. |

Have you tried integrating tempo-change intervals into your workouts (ie, Fartlek runs)? |
Yes, I do this sometimes, alternate medium or light effort running with max effort. I used to play soccer and we would do this kind of running all the time, so it seemed like a natural thing to incorporate for me. This week's runs were entirely all-out sprints with plenty of rest, though (except for warmup of course).

Yeah, I like Crossfit as well. I might try to throw some Crossfit-like stuff into my workouts this coming week. |

Ugh, I stopped riding my bike about a month and a half ago, almost 2 cause I totally ed myself up by not hydrating and riding on a really hot day. Then we basically had 2 months of really hot days so I was put off.
Well yesterday it cooled off and I was going to ride today but I wake up to the first really rainy day of the summer.
DAMN EXTREMES!!! :whip:
I have so much pent up energy at the moment that all I do is sleep.
Its horrible, I know that sounds stupid, but its like, you just are so lazy that you expend no energy and you feel fidgety but can't motivate yourself to move out.
Argh. I should just start going back to the gym more often. Its so boring though. |

| Maybe you should try going for a run rather than biking? ;) |
