does anyone do cardio or just weights? I think both are important. |
you have to do a combo of both or you are wasting your time. i don't personally use any of the cardio machines at the gym but i do walk about 6mi each day i workout and jump on the trampoline to keep my heart rate up during workouts, it's like jumping rope. |

That's not really true. It depends entirely on what you are doing at that particular time.
There are different ways to do weights and there are also different ways to do cardio.
If you're looking to burn fat, you're most likely doing HIIT (cardio) and weights on alternate days. Otherwise you negate the muscle building by overtaxing your muscles with cardio.
If you're bulking up, you're doing low rep, heavy weights with minimal cardio. Mild to moderate cardio, or none at all at certain points.
If you're cutting, you're doing moderate cardio and high rep, moderate weights. You could also do some more intense cardio but have to be careful not to break down the muscles too much.
There is no one way to do things. People need to learn how the body works and know when to do cardio, when to do weights, and how to do them. People also need to stop being lazy bastards and telling others what to do in theory but not actually applying it to themselves. Like me..... |

I ran today with limited pain :) a milestone.
I had stopped trying to practice running because it hurt wayy too much. I stopped for about 3 weeks and just worked on my strength (still have miles to go with that). Today I decided to give it a go to see how it felt and I took about 15 paces without any pain, and then it started. But thats a HUUUUUUUUUUUUGE improvement. Im psyched! |

Yeah. For me the only thing that cardio really adds is fat burning.
As long as I'm sweating through my workouts I know my heart rate is up/I'm doing it right. Good enough for me.
Part of a successful workout is enjoying what you're doing. More often than not cardio feels like a chore for me, so it. |

I still love cardio, though. Nothing beats getting on a C2 and busting ass for 5-6k, or going for a nice cruising run in the woods on a nice day (for me, anyways. YMMV). Might not be really necessary all the time, but I just like getting the blood moving as much as I can.
Speaking of which, I'm going to try cutting back on the heavy weight lifting for a while and substituting with CrossFit workouts. My strength and physique have definitely improved tremendously since I've been on the wagon (last 6 months or so), but I feel like my overall athleticism could improve and I like the sound/philosophy of their workouts. I've always been more for getting fit with functional strength as opposed to just getting big/ripped, and I think the weight work I was doing before hand wasn't the most inducive to that (think Bruce Lee, as opposed to a bodybuilder). Anyone had any experience? I think I'm going to start doing yoga on rest days too... I've got pretty good flexibility overall, but sitting through lectures and homework for hours every day s my core/shoulders/neck up badly, and I could stand to loosen up.
Maybe I'll put up some progress pics later if I can find an easy image host.
But yeah, staying in shape ftmfw |

| I too am on the "cardio is boring" bandwagon, unless it's an actual team sport or competition. Treadmills, bikes and even normal running are excruciatingly boring. |
