Glad I found this thread (again). Definitely going to come out of c0r lurking and post here on a more frequent basis. I've been doing serious strength training for 6+ weeks now and am quite happy with the results I am seeing with my body!
Yesterday's workout: HIIT sprinting - 7 sets of 30 second sprints followed by 90 second cool-downs.
Today it's back to the gym for upper body. Can't wait! |

You can pull the bar down in front of you (to your chin) or behind your head until it touches the back of your neck. At least, that's what we did when I used to use machines. |

ah ha good to know, i touch the bar to the back of my neck but i seem to be the ONLY person who does it that way plus the machine says "could cause injury" doing it that way but that sounds like BS to me. thanks! |

I think that is a horrible form tbh. Only thing I do behind my neck is sraight bar shoulder presses. Pull down seems to with the spine much more than it should be. |

Yeah, I just Googled behind the head lat pulldowns and the general consensus is ", don't!"
I never injured myself doing them though, and neither did any of my friends. I wouldn't worry about it too much, because they still work your lats fine. Their only problem is a higher risk of injury. |

| well damn it, i guess i'll try switching on friday. i just started doing these again today but used to do it all the time going behind the neck and i was fine. i have noticed though that nobody does it my way, i guess there is a valid reason. |

We used to do both. My friends found it harder behind the head, but I actually found it slightly easier.
That was back when I was a complete workout newbie, just taking what my more experienced friends said as gospel. |

yeah, this is a large misconception. I think it is much worse for your back if you alternate behind/infront of the head every rep. |

Well every machine is going to say that for liability purposes. :p
Anyway, it's really important to get proper form for lat pull-downs. A lot of people will load up the weight too high and swing their bodies too far back when they pull down. It's okay to lean back a small bit, but not wildly. Always controlled and full reps (to the collarbone). I wouldn't recommend going behind the head at all. Doesn't serve much purpose. If you want to target different areas of your lats, try mixing up your grips (overhand and under) as well as wide and narrow. |

i lean back at a 15-20 degree angle and do lat pulldowns to the front of my chest...works my core better.
